A delegation from the Sports Writers Association of Ghana, Western Region Chapter (SWAG WR WNR), paid a courtesy visit to the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, at his office located at the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC). The purpose of the visit was to formally introduce the newly elected SWAG WR WNR executive members and seek the minister’s blessings and support.
The delegation included President George Kuntu Blankson, Vice President Abaidoo Abednego, Secretary Umaro Sanda Salifu, and Welfare Officer Amy Fynn-Thompson. Upon their arrival, they were warmly welcomed by the minister’s secretary, setting the stage for a productive meeting.
President George Kuntu Blankson expressed the purpose of the visit, emphasizing that it aimed to introduce the new SWAG WR WNR executive team to the minister. Amy Fynn-Thompson then formally introduced the members of the executive team.
In response, Hon. Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah extended his congratulations to the newly elected executives and wished them success in their roles. He stressed the importance of SWAG WR WNR members working diligently to elevate the sporting image of the Western Region. He also emphasized the need to rebrand the region’s prominent clubs, Wise and Hassaacas, to make them more attractive to potential sponsors.
The minister encouraged sports journalists in the region to shift towards more marketable reporting and coverage methods, which could help improve their financial prospects. He called for unity and support among SWAG WR WNR members to collectively achieve their goals for the region’s sports scene.
Hon. Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah expressed his desire to meet with all SWAG WR WNR members and requested two dates from the executive team to choose one for the meeting.
Regarding the region’s sporting facilities, Gyandu and Essipong Stadiums, the minister provided an update, stating that contractors were expected to be back on site. He expressed hope that by December, necessary roof repairs would be undertaken. Additionally, he mentioned that road construction would affect parts of Gyandu Park, but compensation would be provided to accommodate the changes.
In closing, the SWAG WR WNR president expressed gratitude to the minister for his time and support. He pledged to work closely with the minister to restore the region’s sporting glory. This visit marks a significant step in fostering collaboration between SWAG WR WNR and regional authorities in their shared commitment to the advancement of sports in the Western Region.
