Accra was buzzing with excitement as the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, officially commissioned the University of Ghana Sports Stadium and Rugby Field this morning. These facilities, alongside the newly built, multi-purpose Borteyman Sports Complex, will play a pivotal role in hosting the prestigious African Games in 2024.
The Vice President emphasized the significance of this event, as it marks the first time Ghana will host such a grand sporting spectacle. Scheduled from March 8 to March 23, 2024, the African Games in Accra are expected to draw athletes and sports enthusiasts from all corners of the continent.
The University of Ghana Sports Stadium, initiated by the Government of President J. A. Kufuor, had been left unfinished for eight long years until the current administration took the reins. Its completion not only enhances Ghana’s capacity to host the African Games but also serves as a tribute to the University of Ghana, coinciding with its 75th Anniversary.
In addition to these state-of-the-art facilities, Ghana’s dedication to sports development is underscored by the ongoing construction of 10 sports stadia, with six already completed, in each of the ten old regions. Furthermore, the country boasts over 150 community astro turfs, providing ample opportunities for grassroots talent to flourish.
This event promises to be a monumental occasion, not just for Ghana but for the entire African continent. It exemplifies the country’s commitment to nurturing a culture of sports excellence and fostering an environment where athletes can thrive. As the countdown to the 2024 African Games begins, Ghana is set to showcase its rich sporting heritage and hospitality to the world.
