The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order halting Multichoice Nigeria Limited’s planned increase in DStv and GOtv subscription prices.
According to reports from LEADERSHIP, Multichoice Nigeria Limited recently announced another round of price hikes across its DStv and GOtv packages, scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2024. The company attributed these increases to a rise in the cost of business operations in Nigeria.
In a notice signed by Multichoice CEO John Ugbe and distributed to subscribers via email last Wednesday, the new prices for DStv packages were disclosed. The Premium package will now cost N37,000 monthly, up from the current N29,500 subscription fee, while the Compact+ bouquet will increase to N25,000 from N19,800 monthly.
Additionally, subscribers on the Compact bouquet will see their monthly fee rise to N15,700 from N12,500, and those on the Confam package will be required to pay N9,300, compared to the current N7,400.
The Federal High Court’s intervention serves as a temporary relief to subscribers facing higher costs, emphasizing the importance of regulatory oversight in ensuring fair practices within the pay-TV industry, particularly concerning consumer interests and economic affordability.
