Ghana’s two biggest football clubs Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak will contest for the maiden edition of the Democracy Cup next month in Accra.
This contest, has been instituted by the Parliament of Ghana, and is aimed at promoting parliamentary democracy through sports.
This will be another opportunity for the two Ghanaian giants to renew their rivalry on the local scene as they aim for bragging rights.
The official launch of the Democracy Cup was held at Parliament House in on Thursday, June 13, 2024.
Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, were both represented at the launch, and both affirmed their commitment to honouring the game.
It would be played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, July 5, 2024 with the two sides looking to win this maiden edition.
Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, launched the event which has the backing of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and is to become a main stay on the football calendar every season.
The Democracy Cup has been instituted by Parliament to commemorate 30 years of Parliamentary Democracy in Ghana.
The launch was attended by Members of Parliament, officials of the GFA and the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), as well as other stake holders.
The winner of the match between the two Ghanaian giants, would play Major League Soccer side DC United in Washington, USA later the year.
There would be a special curtain raiser game on the day between the Members of Parliament side and former players of the Ghana national team, the Black Stars.
Ghana’s Parliament, last year celebrated its 30th anniversary since its establishment in 1993 following the coming into effect the 1992 Constitution and the return of the country to democratic rule.
