Medeama SC secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Asante Kotoko in the first-ever match at the newly built TnA Stadium in Tarkwa on Friday evening, thanks to a late strike from Prosper Boakye.
The highly anticipated encounter, graced by Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku, showcased top-tier football that kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout.
Kotoko started brightly and nearly broke the deadlock in the third minute when Albert Amoah’s dangerous cross was expertly intercepted by Medeama defender Michael Enu. Medeama responded with an effort of their own in the 16th minute as Diawisie Taylor found the net from a rebound, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.
Just four minutes later, Medeama took the lead when Nana Kofi Babil capitalized on a headed assist from Michael Enu to slot home the opening goal. The home side had a golden opportunity to extend their lead in the 31st minute when they were awarded a penalty, but Diawisie Taylor’s spot-kick was saved, keeping the score at 1-0.
Kotoko fought back in the second half and found the equalizer in the 64th minute through substitute Bernard Somuah, who finished off a well-constructed team move. As the game seemed destined for a draw, Medeama’s substitute Prosper Boakye tapped in a free-kick delivery in the 89th minute to restore the lead and seal a memorable victory for the home side.
The win was met with jubilant celebrations from the Medeama faithful and marked a perfect inauguration of the TnA Stadium, setting the tone for more thrilling encounters in the future.
