In a remarkable display of regional cooperation, the “PAMOJA Bid,” a joint effort by East African nations, has triumphed in securing the prestigious hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The announcement was made following a pivotal meeting of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee in Cairo, Egypt, with CAF President Patrice Motsepe unveiling the triumphant host countries as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
“The country that will host the 2027 AFCON is Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania,” proclaimed President Motsepe with enthusiasm. This momentous decision reflects not only the capability of the selected nations but also the strength of unity in pursuit of a common goal.
Motsepe elaborated on this unique choice, stating, “The three countries came together because our requirements are very high. I don’t want to mention any specific countries, but I like it when countries come together.” This collaborative approach underscores the commitment to meeting and exceeding the demanding criteria set for hosting the tournament.
The announcement followed a competitive selection process in which several nations across the African continent expressed interest. Notably, Algeria, Egypt, and Botswana were among the initial contenders. Namibia initially partnered with Botswana in a bid but later withdrew from the competition. Zambia and Burkina Faso also expressed interest but did not formally submit their bid books.
This historic decision brings the African football extravaganza to Eastern Africa for the first time since 1970 when Sudan played host, marking only the second occasion in history that the region has had the honor of hosting the prestigious tournament.
The successful “PAMOJA Bid” stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and demonstrates the commitment of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to showcase the best of African football to the world in 2027. As preparations begin in earnest, anticipation and excitement for this grand event in East Africa continue to grow, with football fans eagerly awaiting the spectacle that the 2027 AFCON promises to be.
