William Essu, a former goalkeeper for Legon Cities FC, has reportedly passed away at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Hospital in Cape Coast at the age of 22.
Essu had been suffering from severe health issues for several months, during which he publicly appealed for financial assistance to cover his medical expenses, citing unpaid wages from both his club and national teams.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Foundation and other organizations had provided some financial support to assist with his treatment.
The GFA Foundation donated GHS 10,000, and Black Meteors players collectively contributed GHS 13,000. Despite these efforts, Essu’s condition continued to deteriorate.
Essu’s situation brought attention to the financial and healthcare challenges faced by athletes in Ghana, emphasizing the need for better support systems for players during and after their careers.
