Ghana’s reigning champions, Medeama SC, are on the cusp of a historic achievement in their first-ever attempt at the CAF Champions League. The Yellow and Mauves currently hold a commanding 3-1 advantage over Guinean giants Horoya AC from the first leg of the second preliminary round of the competition.
In a thrilling encounter at the Cape Coast Stadium a fortnight ago, Medeama secured their lead with goals from Nana Kofi Babil, Nurudeen Abdulai, and Kofi Asmah. With this advantage, they have jetted off to Guinea for the return leg, determined to complete their mission of reaching the group stage.
Medeama’s confidence is further bolstered by the return of seven of their key starters, who were absent during the recent Ghana Premier League match against Aduana Stars. The inclusion of talisman Jonathan Sowah, Kwadwo Amoako, Babil, Derrick Fordjour, Abdul Fatawu Hamidu, and Ivorian import Jean Ourega Vital adds depth to their squad.
On the flip side, Horoya AC, a consistent presence in the competition, is seeking their sixth group stage appearance in the last seven years. The Guinean side is keen on overturning the 3-1 deficit to secure a place in this season’s Champions League group phase.
The highly anticipated showdown is set to take place at the Stade General Lansana Conte in Nongo, Conakry, with the kickoff scheduled for 16:00 GMT on Saturday afternoon.
Notably, Horoya will be without the services of defender Ibrahima Aminata Conde due to a red card in the first leg. However, they are expected to welcome Ghanaian-born Burkinabe striker Ocansey Mandela in their quest to turn the tie in their favor.
Football fans across the continent will be glued to their screens, eagerly anticipating a thrilling clash between two determined sides vying for a spot in the prestigious CAF Champions League group stage.
