The Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in Abrankese witnessed a gripping Kumasi derby as Nations FC and Asante Kotoko battled to a 2-2 draw in a match filled with late drama and ten minutes of temporary delay due to fan violence.
Nations FC, newcomers to the top-flight, had remained undefeated at home, setting the stage for an exciting clash with Asante Kotoko, who were seeking their second away victory following a win against Accra Lions two weeks ago.
The game kicked off with both teams displaying their attacking prowess. Peter Acquah Amidu, in combination with Richmond Lamptey, created an opportunity for Sherrif Mohammed in the early minutes, but the latter’s shot narrowly missed its mark. Soon after, Nations FC had their own chance, but Victor’s attempt was thwarted by Nanabeyin Amoah.
The second half took a surprising turn when, in the 47th minute, Henry Ansu inadvertently headed the ball into his own net from a Nations FC corner kick, sending the home fans into jubilation.
Asante Kotoko’s coach, Prosper Ogum, introduced Steven Dese Mukwala and Kyei Dwamena to revitalize the team. Mukwala managed to level the score by the 86th minute, capitalizing on Kalo Ouatarra’s blocked double strikes. Just two minutes later, Dwamena added another goal to Kotoko’s tally.
In a dramatic turn of events, Nations FC was awarded a penalty during additional time, leading to a heated dispute among Kotoko players and their away fans. This dispute resulted in a nearly ten-minute temporary delay.
Amidu Diarra, unfazed by the chaos, stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, sending goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim the wrong way and securing the equalizer for Nations FC.
The thrilling 2-2 draw means that Nations FC has accumulated five points from three home games and remains unbeaten on their home turf. The Kumasi derby lived up to its reputation, providing fans with an exhilarating match filled with late drama and suspense.
