There were wins for Equatorial Guinea and DR Congo on Wednesday as Africa’s qualifiers to the 2026 FIFA World Cup began.
Equatorial Guinea, beat Namibia 1-0 in a home game in Group H with defender Emilio Nsue getting the winner in the second half.
DR Congo, posted a comfortable 2-0 home win over Mauritania as they seek to qualify to the Mundial for the second time.
Second half goals by Yoane Wissa, 62′, and Theo Bongonda, 81′, gave them the three points in this Group B encounter.
In Group C, Rwanda drew goalless at home to Zimbabwe in a closely fought affair with very little to chose between the two sides.
Africa’s qualifiers to the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States of America, continues on Thursday with Burundi playing Gambia; Botswana faces Mozambique; Egypt plays Djibouti with Sudan against Togo. Nigeria will host Lesotho; Gabon faces Kenya; Algeria will be home to Somalia with Cape Verde playing Angola.
At the end of these qualifiers, the nine group winners will advance to the Mundial with a 10th nation facing a playoff to secure qualification.
