Ghana’s first professional football league began in the season of 1993/94 with Obuasi Goldfields (AshantiGold SC), winning the title, and the Miners, went on to win the competition for the next two seasons as well.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA), commenced the campaign on the weekend of December 18-19 with 12 teams participating in this maiden edition of the competition.
The 12 teams were Obuasi Goldfields, Asante Kotoko, Accra Hearts of Oak, Accra Great Olympics, Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs, Okwahu United, GHAPOHA FC, Dawu Youngsters, Real Tamale United, Afienya United and Prampram Mighty Royals.
The first professional football league game in Ghana was played at the Tema Sports Stadium between Mighty Royals and Neoplan Stars of Ashanti Bekwai.
Roland Kwakye scored the first ever goal in this league as Neoplan Stars won 2-0 to open the campaign.
Other games on the opening weekend of the competition, were played on Sunday, December 19, 1993 with Hearts of Oak beating Great Olympics 2-0 in Accra; GHAPOHA FC lost 1-2 to Afienya United at Tema with Okwahu United winning 2-1 over Dawu Youngsters at Nkawkaw.
Goldfields won 2-0 at Obuasi against Ebusua Dwarfs with Asante Kotoko failing to show up for their home game against Real Tamale United in Kumasi.
Goldfields SC now Ashantigold SC, went on to dominate the campaign with their array of stars that included some of the best players on the local scene as well as some from other countries.
The Miners won 15 of the 22 matches they played, drawing four and losing three as they amassed 34 points and scoring 38 goals with 14 against.
Asante Kotoko finished second with 27 points, with Hearts of Oak third on 26, the same as Great Olympics who were fourth.
Ebusua Dwarfs and Okwahu United, had 25 and 23 points respectively in fifth and sixth positions.
Finishing the campaign with 21 points, were a trio of clubs, GHAPOHA, Dawu Youngsters and Real Tamale United who finished in that order.
Afienya United, (19 points), Neoplan Stars, (14 points) and Mighty Royals seven points, were relegated from the first ever Ghanaian professional football league at the end of the campaign.
