The Celebrity Golf Club at Sakumono near Tema is under threat from developers who have encroached on the land for construction.
This encroachment, has seen part of the golf course being taken over by these developers despite a court injunction prohibiting any such development.
Chieftains at the golf club have therefore called for immediate action by the Ministry of Interior, the Greater Accra Regional Security Council and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to protect the golf course.
Kwaku Oppong-Baffoe, Captain of the club, said at a press conference on Friday that, “the golf course is more than a land, it is a community, a history and a future”.
He therefore called on all Ghanaians to join forces with the club to fight this unlawful encroachment before it gets out of hand.
These developers with their land guards, have began clearing trees along the northern edge of the golf course, erecting walls, and disturbingly, blocking access to the dam that provides water to the course.
The area, is earmarked for the development of a practice range for the golf course.
This encroachment, is also threatening to take away the bunker at the end of Hole-1 on the course as well as the entire Hole-2.
In 1987, the Tema Development Corporation (TDC), leased the land to Bill Tandor to build a golf course and holiday resort, and, this became a reality when the Celebrity Golf Club was completed and has since severed as a sanctuary for golfers and a source of employment for the local community.
The golf course, also serves as a part of the national disaster management and evacuation centers.
The Ghana Airforce uses the course for landing and take-off training for disaster evacuation management exercises.
