Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has shed light on his decision to include only one player from the Ghana Premier League in his 23-man squad for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers against Angola and Niger.
The squad features Fredrick Asare, the Asante Kotoko shot-stopper, who joins Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Jojo Wollacot in the goalkeeping department as the sole representative from the domestic topflight league.
Addressing his selection choices, Addo emphasized that a player’s league is not the primary factor in his decision-making process. “I think it is not easy. I said last time we will watch more closely the Ghanaian Premier League. It’s very difficult, and I know if I leave a player out there will be questions,” Addo explained.
He further clarified, “But at the moment, for me, it is not about the Ghana Premier League, French Ligue 1, the EPL, or Bundesliga. It is about the players, and we need the best players to qualify for the World Cup. For me, I don’t care—if I am convinced, I will call you.”
Ghana is set to host Angola on September 5 before facing Niger four days later, with the Black Stars aiming to start their AFCON qualifying campaign on a strong note.
