The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS), have directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA), to propose two local stadia to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as new home venues for Ghana.
The MoYS, is urging the GFA to name the University of Ghana (UG) and the Accra Sports Stadium as new home venue for Ghana’s national teams.
This follows the withdrawal of approval of the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi as a suitable venue to host CAF Category 3 matches.
This was contained in a release issued by the MoYS on Thursday after CAF’s decision was announced following Ghana’s AFCON 2025 qualification game with Angola in Kumasi last Thursday.
The CAF statement, raised concerns about the state of the pitch at the Baba Yara Stadium which it said, is already being addressed following it’s closure after the game with Angola.
The release said: “The Minister has directed the National Sports Authority (NSA), to take steps to resolve issues with the pitch and further instructed the GFA to immediately request CAF to inspect the Accra Sports Stadium and the newly built UN Stadium, for approval as Category 3 match venues for use by the Black Stars in its next international match in October.
It added: “Most issues identified by CAF at the Accra Sports Stadium during a previous inspection, have been resolved; whilst the UG Stadium has already hosted Category 2 matches, but the stadium, since its inauguration, is yet to be inspected by CAF’s independent inspectors for consideration as a suitable Category 3 match venue in accordance with CAF’s Stadium Regulations.”
” The Ministry of Youth and Sports is confident that the UG and Accra Sports Stadia, will meet the requirements for CAF’s Category 3 matches after the inspection, and again reiterate its commitment to upgrading the remaining national stadia to meet the standards required for CAF Category 3 matches, ” the release ended.
