In a surprising turn of events, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Hon. Benjamin Kessie, spearheaded a decision by the Tarkwa community to sack officials from the National Sports Authority (NSA) from the Tarkwa-Nsuaem (TNA) Stadium. This action, which has sparked discussions in the sporting community, was a result of dissatisfaction with the management of the stadium’s operations.
Community members, led by Hon. Kessie, expressed concerns over the poor state of the stadium, citing neglect and mismanagement under the NSA’s oversight. In response, the Tarkwa community resolved to take control of the facility. The move saw the formation of an Interim Management Committee (IMC), tasked with overseeing the daily operations and maintenance of the stadium moving forward.
The IMC, which includes representatives from various stakeholder groups in Tarkwa, will be responsible for ensuring the stadium is properly maintained and that it meets the standards required for hosting sporting events and other community activities. The committee is expected to work closely with local authorities and community members to ensure the facility is run efficiently.
Hon. Benjamin Kessie emphasized the importance of the stadium to the Tarkwa community, noting that it serves not only as a sports venue but also as a hub for social and cultural activities. “We cannot allow our stadium to fall into disrepair, especially when it plays such a vital role in the life of our community. This decision is in the best interest of Tarkwa,” he stated.
The NSA is yet to respond officially to the community’s decision, but the situation has brought attention to the broader issues of sports infrastructure management in Ghana. Community leaders hope that this intervention will set a precedent for better oversight and accountability in the management of public sports facilities across the country.
In the meantime, the Interim Management Committee will begin its work immediately, with the aim of restoring the TNA Stadium to a standard that the Tarkwa community can be proud of.
