The Ghana Supporters Union has firmly refuted allegations suggesting they were offered $400 each to refrain from boycotting their support for the Black Stars during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Addressing the media in Abidjan, Abraham Nkansah, a representative of the union, clarified that the funds were a standard allocation from the ministry to cater to the supporters’ needs.
Contrary to reports insinuating a financial incentive to prevent a potential boycott, Nkansah explained that the money was part of the regular support provided for the fans. He attributed the misunderstanding to misinformation spread by a particular media outlet.
Emphasizing that the supporters had been well taken care of since their arrival, including provisions for food and accommodation, Nkansah affirmed that each supporter received $400. Importantly, this allocation was not intended to dissuade them from fervently supporting the Black Stars.
Ahead of the upcoming match against Egypt at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny, Nkansah reiterated the unwavering commitment of the supporters to cheer on the national team. Assuring that they are in good spirits and ready to rally behind the Black Stars, the supporters remain a steadfast force as Ghana and Egypt vie for their first victory in the tournament.
