Asante Kotoko breathed a sigh of relief on Sunday at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, clinching a crucial 1-0 victory over league leaders Samartex to halt their dismal run of form.
In a much-needed turnaround, midfielder Enock Morrison emerged as the hero for Kotoko, converting from the penalty spot in the second half to secure the lone goal of the game.
After enduring seven winless outings, Kotoko faced a daunting challenge against the formidable Samartex side. However, a motivational meeting with club owner Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II earlier in the week fueled the team’s determination to deliver an improved performance.
Despite Samartex’s resolute defence, Kotoko persisted relentlessly, ultimately finding the breakthrough courtesy of Morrison’s spot-kick.
While Samartex managed a few threatening attempts, Kotoko’s steadfast defence stood firm, clinching only their second win in the second round of the league season.
With this vital victory, Kotoko climbed to 10th place in the league standings, displacing arch-rivals Hearts of Oak, who suffered a 2-0 defeat to Legon Cities on Saturday.
Furthermore, the win propelled Kotoko five points clear of the relegation zone, establishing a four-point cushion between them and the top four contenders.
As Kotoko aims to finish the season strongly, maintaining consistency will be paramount following Sunday’s much-needed relief win.
Meanwhile, Samartex’s defeat failed to inflict significant damage as their closest rivals faltered to capitalize on their stumble. The league leaders retain their position atop the standings, boasting a five-point lead over their nearest competitors.
