Ghana’s team for the African Olympic boxing qualifying tournament have departed Accra for Senegal ahead of the competition.
The team is made up of 12 boxers, seven males and five females for the competition to be held between September 9-15 in Dakar, Senegal.
The men’s team is known as the Black Bombers and the women are called the Black Hitters, and they have been carefully selected to represent the nation as they look to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris, France next year.
The male boxers are Theophilus Allotey (Flyweight), Abdul Wahid Omar (Featherweight), Joseph Commey (LightWelterweight), Alfred Kotey (Light Middleweight), Seth Gyimah (Light Heavyweight), Jonathan Tetteh Heavyweight and David Bawa (Super Heavyweight).
The ladies are Janet Acquah (Flyweight), Ramatu Quaye (Bantamweight), Anatu Mohammed (Featherweight), Sarah Apew (Lightweight) and US based Ornella Sathoud (Middleweight).
According to national coach Ofori Asare, the selection was specially made to fix all the experienced and youthful boxers who are showing promise of delivery.
Dr. Ofori Asare is being assisted by Vincent Akai Nettey, Elvis Robertson and Latequaye Lartey.
Team Ghana, will look to qualify as many boxers as possible to next year’s Olympics where the team will look to build on the bronze medal they won in Tokyo.
