In the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League Week 31 match, Asante Kotoko secured a commanding 2-0 victory over arch-rivals Hearts of Oak, completing a season double over them.
Ugandan striker Steven Mukwala was the star of the show, scoring both goals at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Mukwala, who also scored in their previous 3-2 win earlier in the season, opened the scoring in the eighth minute, outpacing his markers to control a long ball and slotting it in. He sealed the victory in the 95th minute with a stunning solo effort, cutting inside from the left and firing past the goalkeeper.
Despite both teams’ struggles this season, Kotoko demonstrated their superiority, moving into the top half of the table in 9th place, further distancing themselves from the relegation zone. Mukwala’s celebration after his second goal earned him a yellow card for removing his shirt.
Hearts of Oak, however, are in a precarious situation, sitting 14th and just two points above the relegation zone. With three matches remaining, the storied club faces the shocking prospect of relegation unless they can turn their fortunes around quickly.
