The management team of Sampson Segbedzi, Ghana’s welterweight champion, has petitioned the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to take disciplinary action against fellow boxer Isaac Commey for his unprofessional and dangerous behavior during their bout on November 24, 2024, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
The fight, which was highly anticipated, turned controversial after Commey repeatedly broke boxing rules. Despite warnings from the referee for low blows, Commey continued his illegal actions.
The situation escalated in the fifth round when Commey intentionally headbutted Segbedzi, forcing the match to end prematurely and leaving the champion with injuries requiring medical attention.
Segbedzi’s management is calling for the GBA to suspend Commey and to mandate his team to reimburse GHC 10,025.00 in medical expenses incurred as a result of the incident.
“This type of behavior endangers athletes and disrespects the principles of boxing. We urge the GBA to act decisively to protect the integrity of the sport,” the management team stated in the petition.
The Ghana Boxing Authority has yet to respond to the complaint, but the incident has reignited discussions about stricter enforcement of rules to ensure athlete safety and fairness in the sport.
