Ghana’s Faisal Abubakar made a successful defence of his WBO Africa Super Lightweight strap with a fifth round stoppage of his Nigerian opponent Samuel Opaogun on Saturday.
Before a large crowd at the Bukom Boxing Arena, Abubakar demonstrated superior boxing ability and craftsmanship, torturing the Nigerian into submission as he made the first defence of his title.
Referee May Mensah Akakpo stopped the bout after Opaogun was caught with a punch that sent him to the canvas, he stood up immediately, but when the referee called for the fight to continue after the mandatory count, the Nigerian wobbled, signalling the end of the fight.
Opaogun, started the fight well in the first round with some hefty blows, but was slowed down after he was cut on the eye lid as proceedings became intensified.
After the bout when he recovered, he called for a rematch and commended his fans calling Ghana his second home.
Faisal Abubakar, thanked the fans for coming, praising the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), the WBO and his trainers at Charles Quartey Gym for another great outcome.
The champion, is hoping to get into the top 10 rankings in the world after his next title defence as he aims for the world title proper.
