Michael Essien Reveals He Rejected Black Stars Assistant Coach Role

Former Ghanaian football star Michael Essien has revealed that he was approached to take up the Black Stars assistant coaching role but turned down the opportunity, citing his readiness for such a position.
Speaking on Sporty FM’s SportyDrive, Essien disclosed that he had discussions with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo and GFA President Kurt Okraku about the role. However, after careful consideration, he decided against accepting the offer.
> "I was approached to be the Black Stars assistant coach. I spoke with Otto Addo and President Kurt Okraku, but I felt I wasn’t ready," Essien stated.
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder has been gradually transitioning into coaching and is currently gaining experience through coaching badges and stints with professional clubs. While he remains committed to his development in the field, Essien's decision highlights his focus on preparing adequately before taking up major coaching responsibilities.
His revelation has sparked discussions among Ghanaian football fans, with many speculating on whether he could return to the national team setup in
the future.
