Nsoatreman FC Players Seek Floating Status After Club's Withdrawal from GPL

Several players from Nsoatreman FC are seeking floating status from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Players' Status Committee following the club’s recent withdrawal from the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League (GPL). This move would allow them to join new clubs as free agents during the summer transfer window.

Nsoatreman FC officially announced its withdrawal from all GFA-organized competitions, citing safety concerns after incidents in matches against Asante Kotoko and Samartex FC. The decision left the club’s future uncertain and put its players in a difficult position, as they now require official clearance to continue their professional careers elsewhere.

Under GFA regulations, players remain contractually tied to their club even if the team ceases operations unless they are granted floating status. Without this status, they would be unable to register with new clubs unless a mutual termination agreement is reached or the GFA intervenes. The affected players have thus petitioned the Players' Status Committee, arguing that their contracts should be deemed void due to the club’s withdrawal from competition.

The GFA has already activated its disciplinary processes against Nsoatreman FC, ruling that the club will forfeit all remaining matches with automatic three-point and three-goal losses for each scheduled fixture. However, the issue of player status remains unresolved. If granted floating status, these players could freely negotiate with other clubs in Ghana and abroad.

For now, the players are in limbo as they await the GFA’s ruling. Their fate could have broader implications for player rights in Ghanaian football, particularly in cases where clubs abruptly withdraw from competitions.
