Asante Kotoko to Resume Competitive Football After Pooley's Burial – Club Communication Director Sarfo Duku Esq Confirms

Asante Kotoko SC has officially confirmed their intention to return to competitive football immediately following the burial of their late supporter, Francis Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley, on March 6. The announcement was made by the club’s Communications Director, Sarfo Duku Esq.
Nana Pooley tragically passed away on February 2, 2025, after being injured during a Ghana Premier League match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC. His sudden death left the football community in shock and prompted the club to suspend all football-related activities, including matches and training, out of respect for the late fan and to allow the necessary time for justice to be pursued.
In the aftermath of Pooley’s death, the club expressed deep concerns about the safety and security measures at football stadiums across the country. Asante Kotoko, alongside their traditional rivals, Hearts of Oak, jointly petitioned the Ghana Football Association (GFA), urging them to implement stricter security protocols at all matches to prevent further tragedies.
The confirmation of the team's return to the pitch has been met with both anticipation and a renewed sense of responsibility. Sarfo Duku emphasized that the club's decision to resume play reflects their dedication to honoring Pooley’s memory, while also ensuring the safety of players, fans, and officials in the future.
“Asante Kotoko SC will immediately return to competitive football after the burial of Nana Pooley on March 6,” Duku said. “We are committed to playing the rest of the season with the highest levels of professionalism and security, and we believe that the lessons learned from this tragedy will help improve our football culture going forward.”
In preparation for their return to the Ghana Premier League, Asante Kotoko has resumed training, with the team focusing on regaining match fitness and tactical sharpness. The club is hopeful that the resumption of football will help lift the spirits of their loyal supporters, who have been deeply affected by the loss of Pooley.
The club also expressed their intention to remain closely involved in the discussions regarding football safety, continuing their advocacy for reforms that will ensure the well-being of all those involved in the sport. Asante Kotoko hopes that the changes put in place will help to prevent similar incidents in the future, providing a safer environment for everyone attending matches.
The upcoming matches will not only mark the club’s return to action but will also be seen as a tribute to the memory of Nana Pooley, whose life was tragically cut short. Asante Kotoko remains committed to making sure that his legacy lives on both on and off the pitch.
