CAF Confederation Cup: Kotoko edge Kwara United in seven-goal thriller
Asante Kotoko secured a dramatic 4-3 victory over Nigeria’s Kwara United in their CAF Confederation Cup encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors showed grit and resilience in front of their home fans, overcoming a spirited Kwara United side in a pulsating contest that produced seven goals.
Kotoko took the lead in the 19th minute through Emmanuel Antwi, who capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot home. Albert Amoah doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time before the visitors pulled one back almost immediately, with Jonas Atule scoring in added time of the first half after already reducing the deficit in the 34th minute.
The second half resumed with Joseph Ablorh restoring Kotoko’s cushion in the 47th minute, sending the stadium into wild celebrations. Amoah then converted from the spot in the 73rd minute to make it 4-2, putting the hosts firmly in control.
Kwara United, however, refused to bow out quietly. Abdul Shola struck late in the 88th minute to set up a tense finale, but Kotoko held on to claim a crucial win in their Confederation Cup campaign.
The victory highlights Kotoko’s attacking flair but also exposes defensive lapses they will need to address ahead of the return leg in Nigeria.
