Ghana Premier League 2025/26 Kicks Off: Hearts of Oak Draw 0-0 with Hohoe United, 7th Straight Matchday 1 Without a Win

The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season kicked off at the Accra Sports Stadium with a cagey contest, as giants Accra Hearts of Oak were held to a frustrating goalless draw by newly promoted Hohoe United.

The Phobians came into the fixture with high expectations, backed by a vibrant home crowd, but once again failed to break their opening-day jinx. Despite dominating possession and creating the better chances, Hearts lacked the cutting edge in the final third, with Hohoe United’s defence remaining resolute throughout the 90 minutes.

Debutants Hohoe United looked composed and disciplined in their first-ever top-flight outing. Their defensive shape frustrated the Phobians, while quick counters caused moments of discomfort for Hearts’ backline. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made some crucial interventions to keep the visitors at bay.

Hearts of Oak’s best opportunities fell to forward Frank Abora and midfielder Martin Karikari, but their efforts were either wayward or comfortably dealt with by Hohoe’s goalkeeper.

The result means that Hearts of Oak remain winless in matchday one fixtures of the GPL for the seventh consecutive season, a worrying trend that continues to haunt the Accra-based club.

For Hohoe United, the draw marks a historic first point in the Ghana Premier League and a positive start to life in the top division.

Both teams will now shift their attention to matchday two, with Hearts desperate to bounce back and Hohoe United seeking to build on this impressive debut.
