Black Queens Clinch Bronze at 2024 WAFCON, Honoured by Sports Minister

Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, have etched their names into history after securing a bronze medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. The hard-fought achievement marks a major milestone for Ghanaian women’s football, underscoring the team’s grit, determination, and resurgence on the continental stage.

The Queens sealed their third-place finish with a dramatic comeback against defending champions South Africa, overturning a 1-0 deficit to force a draw before winning in a nail-biting penalty shootout.

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, led the tributes, praising the team’s courage and unity. “Your remarkable journey to the podium is a testament to your unwavering dedication, resilience, and teamwork,” he said. “That victory over South Africa showcased Ghanaian football at its finest.”

This bronze medal is Ghana’s second in WAFCON history, matching their 2016 third-place finish. Hon. Adams also credited Head Coach Kim Lars for his tactical brilliance and the fighting spirit he instilled in the squad. “I applaud the efforts of the entire technical team, players, and support staff who have all played vital roles in this success,” he added.

The Black Queens’ achievement has sparked celebrations across Ghana, with fans and citizens hailing it as a proud national moment. It is also seen as a major boost for the future of women’s football in Ghana, with hopes that it will inspire more girls to take up the sport and aim for international glory.

As the Queens return home, their bronze triumph stands as a shining example of what Ghanaian athletes can achieve through perseverance, teamwork, and national pride.
